Supplement Facts Analysis

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) considers herbal, vitamin and mineral supplements all to be dietary supplements.  Dietary supplements differ from regular food and drink products in that they are designed to supplement a diet only.  In 1994, Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), which states that manufacturers don't have to prove the safety or effectiveness of a product before it hits the market.  Although DSHEA ensures that dietary supplements will continue to be widely available and competitively priced, manufacturers and importers of dietary supplements will still need to label their products responsibly.

May include the items listed below:

Calories  Cholesterol   Vitamin C
Calories from Fat Dietary Fiber Sodium
Protein Saturated Fats Iron
Carbohydrates  Total Fat  Calcium
Sugars  Vitamin A Potassium

Please note that many supplements will not require the nutritional content listed above -- for example, if you have a gingko biloba tablet, you will simply need to list the amount of gingko.  However, if you fortify your product with vitamins and minerals (either listed here or not), you will need to list this on your supplement facts label.   If your product is a drink or energy bar, for example, you will need to generate a Nutrition Facts panel along with the requisite supplement information.

In addition to the Supplements Facts label, you also need to include the following on your information panel:

• Name of product

• Net quantity of contents

• Ingredients & amounts

• Serving sizes

• Name and address of manufacturer, packer or distributor

• Disclaimer: "This statement has not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration.  This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease."

Information should be in English.  Should information be printed in a foreign language and/or in metric units, they must also appear in English and/or in US units.
