Three FDA Draft Guidances and
three pieces of proposed food safety legislation are currently
pending. Anyone can file Comments with the applicable FDA
Docket on the pending Guidances or contact the applicable
Congressional staff on the pending legislation. See links
below:
3 Draft Guidances:
1.
Draft Guidance: Good Importer Practices
2.
Guidance for Industry: Voluntary Third-Party Certification

3.
Guidance for Industry: Submission of Laboratory Packages By
Accredited Laboratories
3 proposed pieces of legislation:
1.
Senate Bill S.510- Durbin - D-Ill; “FDA Food Safety
Modernization Act”
This would require registration of
food plants and importers, would require that food plants
develop HACCP Plans, allow FDA to assess penalties where
importers cause problems that require FDA staff time, would
establish a “Voluntary Qualified Importer Program,” etc.
2.
House
Bill HR 875 - DeLauro- D-Conn; “Food Safety Modernization Act”
This would reorganize the regulation
of foods into an Agency separated from the regulation of drugs
and cosmetics (the Food and Drug Administration as it exists
would be no more).
3.
House Bill HR 759 - Dingell- D-Mi; “FDA Globalization Act of
2009”
This would require a $10,000 annual registration
fee from all food importers.
